History & Club Information
Founded in Biloxi, Mississippi — 1924
The Order of Mithras was first organized in 1924 by a group of sixty-five young men of Biloxi and remains the oldest men's carnival organization on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Jacinto Baltar, Roy Glennon, Paul Bradford, Albert Laurey, John White, and Glenn Swetman were just a few of the charter members. The first Ball for Mithras was held on February 29, 1924 at the Biloxi Elks Home on Lameuse Street, and was ruled by his majesty King E. L. Dukate.
Although our organization is over a century old, the Ball in 2026 will be our 98th, as no Balls were held during World War II in the 1940s, in 2006 following Hurricane Katrina, or in 2021 due to COVID-19. Mithras still holds true today to its original bylaws, which require that a man may only be considered for membership if he resides or works in the City of Biloxi.
